Tata Group has started construction of semiconductor assembly and test facility in Assam worth Rs 27,000 crore. This semiconductor plant will produce 4.83 crore semiconductor chips every day. It is expected to be operational by 2025.
The chips manufactured here will be used in other sectors including electric vehicles, communication and network infrastructure. On February 29, 2024, the Union Cabinet approved the project. The project is part of the India’s semiconductor mission.
Tata Sons Chairman N Chandrasekaran said, “This plant is expected to create 27,000 jobs. There will be 15,000 direct and 12,000 indirect jobs. We hope that in 2025 we will be able to complete this project and start operation quickly. ‘
On March 13, Prime Minister Narendra Modi laid the foundation stone for three semiconductor facilities, one in Gujarat and one in
Assam. Of these, 2 are being built in Gujarat and 1 in Assam. The Tata Group is setting up two of these three plants. One plant is being built in Dholera in Gujarat and one in Jagiroad in Assam.
The government had also announced
the PLI scheme to encourage semiconductors in the country India the government had also announced the PLI scheme. The Indian semiconductor market was valued at $27.2 billion in 2021 and is expected to grow 19% annually to reach $64 billion by 2026.
According to the
Semiconductor Industry Association (SEMI), Taiwan accounts for 60% of the global chip fabrication capacity (the ability to physically make semiconductors.Taiwan TSMC alone manufactures nearly half of the world’s semiconductors.
Like
the brain of a gadget, semiconductor chips are made of silicon, which works to control electricity in the circuit. This chip helps gadgets operate like a brain. Without this, any electronic instrument is incomplete. Computers, laptops, cars, washing machines, ATMs, hospital machines, and even smartphones work on semiconductor chips.
